Depends on the hair straightener. Maybe its temperature was not high enough or the one you are using is not top of the line. You can always get a good quality hair iron for $50.
I personally like the Remington with the fabric plates. It works wonders with my hair and my hair is not the easiest to work with.

Get a professional iron....$125..range...or use the permipress setting on the clothing iron and brush your hair staight on a iron board....have someone brush, iron, brush, and iron.....it works..Straighters work but are harsh on the hair.
