It's called the mundane of life....we get bored with what we have, want a change and then want what we don't have! Opposites attract!! LOL
Having said that though, it seems that once those curly headed people get the hair relaxed or chemically straightened, after a while they get to missing those curly locks, get tired of the time and expense of keeping up the straight stuff....same goes for the straight hairs doing the perm thing. Nothing is worse than a pooped out perm, and most people hate a fresh perm, so there is a relatively short time span that those perms look really great.
The best thing is to embrace the hair you naturally have and learn how to work with it and make the most of it. Nowadays, they are making some awesome products to help people with each hair type make the most of what they have! A lot of curly type products that help w/ frizz, and some smoothing products/ bodifying products to help those straighties have gorgeous locks!

I have ridiculously curly hair and I don't want straight hair, BUT I have worked with a lot of people over the years that tell me to try and get it straightened. I even received a gift certificate to get it straightened %26lt;they wanted me to do it for my wedding, which I didn't%26gt;. I think people just want what is in style for the most part. Curly is coming back so people will stop pestering me, get perms, and then start harassing me again when the fad goes back to straight.
As for the people that want their hair the opposite of how it is most of it is probably just for a change of pace, or sometimes insecurity in how they look.
